I haven’t written a weird book post in over a year. Shameful! Especially since I love them so. Here are seven weird and wonderful books for those of you who like that sort of thing.
When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O’Neill.
O’Neill is a special sort of writer. Each books feels so unique, like a delicious dessert at a French Canadian Patisserie. This book takes place in 19th century Montreal and it’s about Marie Antoine, a young girl who is the daughter of the richest man in the city. She’s perfectly content until Sadie moves to the neighborhood. The girls are both obsessed and repelled by one another, raising the stakes of their childhood games until things get dangerous. Yes, there’s more than a nod to Marie Antoinette, but this novel is wholly original and interesting.
