I recently went on an art retreat to Santa Fe New Mexico.
Whenever I travel, I make it a priority to visit and purchase books from local bookstores. I even brought a banned book all the way from Los Angeles so that I could seek out a Little Free Library.
Do you all know about the Little Free Library App? It’s amazing!
Anyhow, over the course of a week, I ended up visiting four bookstores, all walking distance from my hotel.
The first was Collected Works Bookstore. This bookstore was fantastic. And has a cute cafe inside with excellent coffee. And a puzzle table! I actually visited twice, because there was an author event happening one night and I wanted to check it out.
I ended up purchasing a moleskine notebook to keep my Substack posts organized.
One day, I took a very long walk towards the Art District and went to Garcia Street Books, also a fantastic bookstore. Here, I purchased Jami Attenberg’s 1000 Words: A Writer’s Guide to Staying Creative, Focused and Productive All Year Round.
A new art friend told me about a cute store around the corner from our hotel called The Good Stuff. In addition to new and used books, they also sell vinyl records and t-shirts. I found a used copy of The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, which was very convenient because that is our Book to Film group read for June.
Last, but certainly not least is the Beastly Book Store. We stumbled upon this store when we were painting down by the rail yard. This store focuses on fantasy and science fiction books. I appreciated the life-sized giant robot, but I completely forgot what book this robot comes from. Can anyone help me out here? Later, I found out that this bookstore is owned by Game of Thrones author, George RR Martin. While this genre is not really my thing, I ended up purchasing Kelly Link’s short story collection White Cat, Black Dog.
In short, Santa Fe is a fantastic city for book lovers!
The best way you can support this show is to click on the books below and purchase them through my Bookshop.org affiliate store. A portion of your spending goes to independent bookstores! A win-win-win! (You win, I win, indie bookstores win!)Â
It looks like the robot from the movie Giant Robot. How fabulous that there were four bookstores within walking distance.
