Books Are My People: A Podcast Companion Newsletter
Dear Reader,
I am writing from my first artist retreat as a painter! I’ve attended them as a writer before, so this trip feels extra special. I’m nestled in Northern California, in a little cabin that is just so adorable! My only goal for the next week is to produce art. It’s a dream come true and I can’t wait to share more about this experience when I’m back home.
In the meantime: a new week, a new poll.

The Big Chill Vibes: Among Friends by Hal Ebbott -Two deeply intertwined families have gathered to mark the host’s fifty-second birthday. Together, the group forms an enviable portrait of middle age. Harrowing reality tv *The Compound by Aisling Rawle - Lily—a bored, beautiful twenty-something—wakes up on a remote desert compound, alongside nineteen other contestants competing on a massively popular reality show. To win, she must outlast her housemates to stay in the Compound the longest. When the unseen producers raise the stakes, forcing contestants into upsetting, even dangerous situations, the line between playing the game and surviving it begins to blur.
From the author of The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois (which I loved!) : Misbehaving at the Crossroads: Essays and Writings by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers - Jeffers explores the emotional and historical tensions in Black women’s public lives and her own private life.
