Happy Friday! (And happy National Coffee Day) I’m always giddy on Fridays because I know I’ll have more time to read over the weekend. Enter the Friday Book Social Club, a place where you can share what you are currently reading or what you are looking forward to reading!
Once a month, I will aim to move this discussion to a live zoom for people who want to casually sip on something and talk about books for 20 minutes.
I’m currently reading Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino. You may know that name from her other books including Parakeet and 2 a.m. at the Cat’s Pajamas. As in 2 a.m. at the Cat’s Pajamas, there is a young protagonist and Bertino is a master of getting in the the mind of twelve-year-old. I’m only 20% in, but I’m intrigued by this girl who ruminates on how infinite space is while she’s living in cramped quarters with her unreliable mother.
Beautyland releases on January 16th, 2024.

I am reading this Other Eden by Pau Harding. It is based on a true story of an island in Maine where an enslaved man brought his is Irish wife to live a free life and create an orchard. The lives of their descendants during a time of science and race on a path of colliding. I’ve not completed reading this. It’s not a book to race through. It likely will be an immeasurable read. I’m taking my time with this one and appreciating the writing, the history and the art description. The author will be interviewed in a few weeks on PBS and I am so looking forward to it.
I'm reading Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo. It's a very sensitively written and funny book about a very unfamiliar to me world.
